Voltaire and the NYPD Cops

Newman made a comment about the profanity but eventually apologized to the cops. After they left, he noted that usually he’d go crazy on a heckler who told him to shut the fuck up but that it’s different with cops, and he couldn’t tell them to shut the fuck up, could he?

NYPD cops tell a comedian to “Shut the Fuck Up” and he’s afraid to criticize them. I don’t blame him, you never know how these thugs may abuse their power over the people they’re supposed to protect. And they’ll get away with it, too. Nothing much you can do about it, just take your lumps from your low-IQ “betters” and try to get away with your life.

Which leads me to the seemingly misattributed quote to Voltaire, but is actually written by Kevin Strom:

“To determine the true rulers of any society, all you must do is ask yourself this question: Who is it that I am not permitted to criticize? We all know who it is that we are not permitted to criticize.”

So what happens when the jester fears to speak truth to the king?
